Working Of Metal Detector

What is the first thing that comes across your mind when you hear of the word “Metal Detector”? Possibly, a picture of a person combing through a barren land with a pole like device in his hand, looking for ferrous objects or, maybe you think of a security personnel scanning visitors and travelers on the entry of the gate. There are different types of metal detectors that serve different function. Commercial Metal Detector is used by security guards to scan visitors and travelers as they enter a premise. In addition to this, there are consumer metal detectors that are used by hobbyist around the world to recover coins, relics, treasures etc.

Working Of A Metal Detector

A Metal Detector consists of a control box that assimilates signal, a search coil and a stabilizer. The control box includes a circuitry, small controls, speakers, batteries and a microprocessor. The “shaft” of a Metal detector joins the control box and can be adjusted according to the height and comfort of the user. A “search coil” is located at the far end of the pole, senses a metal and sends the signal to the “control box”. A “stabilizer” is generally used to keep the unit steady when sweeping a metal detector back and forth.

Metal Detectors generally work on three technologies:

  • Very Low Frequency (VLF)
  • Pulse Induction (PI)
  • Beat Frequency Oscilation (BFO)

VLF is extremely versatile and among the most popular metal detector types. It can cover a variety of different terrains. In a VLF, the outer coiler acts as the transmitter, while an inner coil acts as a receiver.

PI is excellent for scanning relics buried deep underground. They can easily filter out ferrous objects. Some PI detector work on one search coil as a transmitter and receiver, while other rely on three coils.

BFO is budget friendly. If you are starting with metal detection, you may wish to opt for a metal detector based on BFP technology. This technology uses two coils; one in the search head while the smaller coil connects to the control box.
